Progress Update
29th May 2026
Dear <>,
Works continue to progress across the project, with activity visible at a number of locations along the route. As a point of interest, road users may notice a bridge structure being assembled along the verge of the existing N28 near the golf course from next week. This is a temporary bridge that is being prepared off‑line and will be transported and lifted into position at a later stage.
In the Rochestown area, retaining wall construction and road‑widening works extending from the Bloomfield junction remain ongoing. Works on a retaining wall to the right‑hand side of the off‑ramp are due to recommence in the coming weeks following a short pause.

At the Mount Oval off‑ramp, excavation works for the new slip road continue as planned. At Maryborough Hill, advance works are now scheduled to begin after the June Bank Holiday weekend and will include utility diversions and the removal of sections of boundary walls to facilitate upcoming construction. Along the Maryborough to Carr’s Hill link road, excavation activities and the construction of the Retaining Walls on both sides of the N28 are ongoing and will continue for a number of months.

Elsewhere, night works are planned on the R609 and R855 (Carrigaline Road) on 4th June 2026 to complete a service connection. On the Board of Works Road, excavation and bridge construction works are continuing and will remain active for the foreseeable future. In the Shannonpark area, progress continues on the Structure and the new link road. Temporary lane adjustments remain in place to allow completion of the south abutment, with this arrangement expected to remain for a few more weeks before traffic transitions onto the newly completed road section.

Looking ahead, works to connect the existing L2473 (Ballinrea Road) to a new roundabout are expected to begin in the coming weeks. At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), construction traffic continues to cross the roadway during working hours, and excavation for the overbridge is due to commence shortly.
Traffic Management
Traffic management arrangements continue to support these works. At the Rochestown off‑ramp, two lanes will be reinstated from Friday evening, improving traffic flow in this area.
At Mount Oval, flagmen remain in place to safely manage plant crossings associated with slip road construction. On Maryborough Hill near the bridge, traffic management measures, including stop/go operations and temporary traffic signals, will be introduced after the June bank holiday weekend to facilitate service diversion works.
Traffic management remains active on the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), both east and west of the N28, where a combination of flagmen and temporary signals are used during working hours to control plant movements, depending on weather and site conditions. Additionally, stop/go arrangements will be implemented during the planned night works on 4th June to allow for the service connection works to be completed.
Intermittent traffic control measures also remain in place on the Board of Works Road, supported by flagmen or temporary signals as required. Along the R611 (Carrigaline Road), lane realignments continue, and road users are advised to follow all signage carefully. Flagmen are also present on Ballinrea Road during working hours, with additional traffic management along the R611 verge.
At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), stop/go controls remain in operation throughout working hours to allow construction machinery to safely cross the road.
Rock excavation by means of controlled blasting has recommenced in an area of cutting to the North of the Shannonpark Roundabout.

The surfacing works on the L6517 (Loughbeg Road) between the Tower Road junction and the Johnson & Johnson (DePuys) entrance were completed this week. The relining of this area and installation of ramps and bollards will be carried out next week.
