Carrs Hill Closure July 24th – 27th

As part of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway scheme, the existing overbridge at Maryborough Hill will be demolished and replaced with a new structure. To minimise disruption, a temporary bridge will be installed, allowing traffic on Maryborough Hill Road to continue operating during the works.

Installation of the temporary bridge is scheduled to take place between 8pm on Friday 24th July and 5am on Monday 27th July 2026, during which time the N28 will be fully closed between Rochestown and Carrs Hill. Some short‑duration closures of Maryborough Hill Road will also be required at key stages, particularly during lifting operations, to ensure safety.

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place throughout the closure, and emergency services will be notified in advance to maintain access.

Progress continues across the scheme, with works advancing at a number of locations.

In the Rochestown area, retaining wall construction and road widening from the Bloomfield junction remain ongoing, with blacktop surfacing scheduled to begin next week. The Rochestown off‑ramp will also be reduced to a single lane from next week for approximately one month to facilitate these works.

Excavation works for the foundations of the structure, located south of Rochestown Road, are planned to commence in early July.

At Mount Oval, excavation for the new slip road connection continues to progress. At Maryborough Hill, night‑time excavation works for service crossings are due to begin next week, while hoarding will be installed in the Edgewood area during the same period. Along the Maryborough to Carr’s Hill link road, construction activity remains ongoing, including excavation and works on the retaining walls on both sides of the N28, with these works expected to continue for several months. Bridge construction on the Board of Works Road is also progressing and will remain active for the foreseeable future.

In the Shannonpark area, works on the structure and the associated link road continue, with preparations underway for the installation of precast beams spanning between the retaining walls. Delivery of these beams is being planned and will take place overnight under escort due to their size, with further updates to be provided via the project website, M28 app and X. Looking ahead, works to tie in the existing L2473 (Ballinrea Road) with a new roundabout are expected to commence in mid‑July.

Elsewhere, work on the structure at Rock Road remains ongoing. At Cogan’s Lane, construction plant will be crossing intermittently during working hours. In Shanbally (Marion Terrace), machinery continues to cross the road during the day, and excavation works for the overbridge are due to begin shortly. Foundation works for this structure are also scheduled to commence within the next couple of weeks.

Traffic Management
Traffic management measures continue to be implemented to safely support construction activities. From next week, the N28 off‑ramp at Rochestown will operate with a single lane for approximately one month while works are carried out in this area.

At Maryborough Hill near the bridge, traffic management measures, including stop/go systems and temporary traffic signals, will be introduced next week to facilitate service diversion works. Traffic management remains in place along the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), both east and west of the N28, where flagmen or temporary traffic lights are used during working hours to control plant crossings associated with earthworks.

On the Board of Works Road, intermittent traffic control measures—using either flagmen or signals—are in operation during working hours as required. Similar arrangements remain in place on Ballinrea Road, along with traffic management along the verge of the R611.

At Cogan’s Lane, flagmen or temporary traffic lights will be in operation during working hours to manage plant movements safely. In Shanbally (Marion Terrace), stop/go traffic management remains in place during working hours to accommodate ongoing construction activity and machinery crossings.

Rock excavation by means of controlled blasting has recommenced in an area of cutting to the North of the Shannonpark Roundabout.

Ringaskiddy Relief Road

Works on the Ringaskiddy Relief Road are nearing completion, with the scheme expected to open to traffic by the end of July. This new route will provide improved connectivity to Ringaskiddy; however, it is important to note that it will operate as a protected road. As such, pedestrians and cyclists will not be permitted to use this section once it becomes operational.

Boundary wall works were completed at Barnahely this week, and the stonemasons have commenced the last section of wall at Ringport today.

Snagging works are ongoing throughout the scheme. Some minor signage and line marking works are also scheduled to be completed in the next week.
