Carrs Hill Closure July 24th – 27th

As part of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway scheme, the existing overbridge at Maryborough Hill will be demolished and replaced with a new structure. To minimise disruption, a temporary bridge will be installed, allowing traffic on Maryborough Hill Road to continue operating during the works.

Installation of the temporary bridge is scheduled to take place between 8pm on Friday 24th July and 5am on Monday 27th July 2026, during which time the N28 will be fully closed between Rochestown and Carrs Hill. Some short‑duration closures of Maryborough Hill Road will also be required at key stages, particularly during lifting operations, to ensure safety.

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place throughout the closure, and emergency services will be notified in advance to maintain access.

Construction activities continue to progress along the route, with a number of key milestones planned over the coming weeks.

In Rochestown, retaining wall construction and road widening works remain ongoing, with traffic expected to transfer onto a newly surfaced section of roadway over the next fortnight (check app for updates). Upgrade works to the surface of the existing N28 bridge have also commenced within the current traffic management arrangement, while excavation works for the foundations of the structure, south of Rochestown Road, are expected to begin towards the end of July. The Rochestown off-ramp remains reduced to a single lane and will continue to operate under this arrangement for a number of weeks.

A significant milestone for the project will take place over the weekend of 24th July, when the N28 will be closed to facilitate the installation of the temporary bridge at Maryborough Hill. This temporary structure will allow traffic to be maintained while the existing overbridge is replaced as part of the M28 scheme.

Works continue at the Mount Oval off-ramp, where excavation for the new slip road is progressing. At Maryborough Hill, night-time excavation works for service crossings are due to commence next week, while hoarding installation in the Edgewood area is planned over the coming weeks. Along the Maryborough to Carr’s Hill link road, construction of the retaining walls and associated excavation works remain ongoing and will continue for the coming months. Construction of the new bridge structure on the Board of Works Road is also progressing steadily.

In the Shannonpark area, work continues on the bridge structure and the new link road. Works to connect the new roundabout into the existing L2473 have now commenced, and tie-in works to the existing road network are expected in the coming weeks. Surfacing works are also planned on the new section of road connecting to the R611 before the final tie-in to the existing carriageway is completed.

Elsewhere, construction of the bridge structure at Rock Road remains ongoing. At Cogan’s Road, machinery crossings will continue intermittently during working hours. In Shanbally (Marion Terrace), construction traffic continues to use the road crossing during the day, while excavation works for the overbridge are expected to commence shortly. Foundation works for this structure are also due to begin in the coming weeks.

Traffic Management
A number of traffic management measures are currently in place to support ongoing works.

In the Rochestown area, the off-ramp remains reduced to a single lane while construction activities continue. Traffic is expected to move permanently onto newly constructed slip lanes over the next fortnight. At Mount Oval, flagmen and temporary traffic lights remain in operation to safely manage plant crossings associated with slip road works.

Night-time traffic management, including stop/go operations and temporary traffic signals, will be introduced at Maryborough Hill next week to facilitate service diversion works. Elsewhere along the route, traffic management remains in place on the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), with flagmen or temporary traffic lights controlling plant crossings during working hours.

Intermittent traffic control measures also remain active on the Board of Works Road. Flagmen continue to manage plant crossings on Ballinrea Road, with additional traffic management in place along the verge of the R611. At Cogan’s Road, flagmen or traffic lights will be used during working hours to facilitate machinery movements, while stop/go controls remain in operation intermittently at Shanbally (Marion Terrace).

Rock excavation by means of controlled blasting has recommenced in an area of cutting to the North of the Shannonpark Roundabout.

Ringaskiddy Relief Road

Works on the Ringaskiddy Relief Road are nearing completion, with the scheme expected to open to traffic by the end of July. This new route will provide improved connectivity to Ringaskiddy; however, it is important to note that it will operate as a protected road. As such, pedestrians and cyclists will not be permitted to use this section once it becomes operational.
