Progress Update
20th March 2026
New M28 Live App!

The M28 Project Team is pleased to announce the launch of the new M28 App, now available on both the App Store and Google Play Store. The app offers a range of useful features, including live traffic camera feeds along the N28 corridor, real‑time traffic updates for motorists, details of upcoming scheduled works, live journey times, and push‑notification alerts for incidents or accidents.
Dear <>,
Works continue across key areas of the project.
In the Rochestown area, retaining wall construction beside the N28 off‑ramp is ongoing, alongside continued widening works extending from the Bloomfield Junction. On Rochestown Road, a series of investigation works will take place beneath the existing bridge next week as part of upcoming structural activities.

Preparations for the new Mount Oval slip road are advancing, with excavation scheduled to begin on 7th April 2026. At Maryborough Hill, advance works—including service diversions and the removal of selected boundary walls—are due to commence over the next couple of weeks.
Excavation and construction for the Maryborough–Carr’s Hill link road are well underway, with the retaining wall progressing and works expected to continue in this area for several months.

On the Board of Works Road, excavation and bridge construction activities have begun and will remain ongoing for an extended period.
At Shannonpark, works on the structure and the new link road are progressing, with surfacing works due to start shortly; this phase will take approximately two weeks, after which traffic on the R611 will be diverted onto the newly completed section of road. Night‑time service crossings will also take place along the R611 to avoid peak‑time disruption.
Additionally, machinery movements across the road at Shanbally (Marion Terrace) will begin on 13th April.

Traffic Management
A number of traffic management arrangements are in place to support current and upcoming works. On the Rochestown off‑ramp from the existing N28, a lane closure remains active, with one lane open to traffic while retaining‑wall works continue. Pedestrian diversions will be in place during daytime hours on Rochestown Road beneath the existing bridge while investigation works proceed.
Traffic management will also be in effect at the Mount Oval slip road, with flagmen in operation from 13th April to manage plant crossings. On Maryborough Hill near the bridge, daytime traffic management will be implemented next week, maintaining two‑way traffic at all times. Further measures—including stop/go operations and temporary signals—will be required in April to facilitate service diversions; more details will be provided in the next update.
From 6th April 2026, the N28 between Rochestown and Carr’s Hill will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for approximately six months reducing the route to a single lane in each direction. Traffic management remains active along the R855 and R609 (Carrigaline Road), where flagmen support plant crossings during working hours subject to weather conditions. Similar intermittent arrangements are in place on the Board of Works Road.
A new site access point is now operational at the Shannonpark roundabout, providing improved entry to the works area. The R611 is scheduled to switch to its new alignment on 20th April, and night‑time service‑related road crossings will take place from 13th April for three nights. Flagmen also remain active along Ballinrea Road, with traffic management in place along the R611 verge.
At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), stop/go controls will be in operation during working hours to manage machinery crossing the road.

There will be no rock excavation by means of controlled blasting in the coming weeks.

Mainline Works
Construction of the CCTV column and ITS gantry foundations is progressing across four locations. Finishing works are ongoing throughout the scheme, and the commissioning of the public lighting system is now nearing completion. Preparatory works have also commenced for the installation of the pavement wearing course.

Barnahely Roundabout
The primary focus of works at present is in the Barnahealy area. Construction of the footway and cycleway on the eastern side of the road, along the boundary with the graveyard, has now been completed. The works have since progressed to the western side of the road, near the J&J entrance.

The M28 Project Team wishes to acknowledge and thank all road users for their continued patience and cooperation during these works.
