Progress Update
8th August 2025
Dear <>,
Work is continuing at pace across the project. Earthworks are progressing from Shannonpark to embankment fill areas east and west of Shannonpark, with topsoil stripping continuing between Barnahely and Rafeen. Tree felling, mulching, and root removal will continue along the off-ramp to Rochestown from the N28, with localised traffic management in place on the slip road for the next week to ensure safety. In Rochestown, ducting works in the St Patrick’s Church area will also continue next week, again under localised taffic management.

Ecology protection measures are being maintained as site clearance works progress, helping to safeguard the local environment. Consultation with utility providers is advancing to finalise the remaining planned service diversions. In addition, the import of material for the Motorway Juntion at Shanbally is continuing, with lorries travelling along the N28 from R613 in Ringaskiddy towards Shanbally before turning left approximately 150 metres before the roundabout.

Rock excavation by means of controlled blasting is proposed to commence on the project on Thursday the 21st of August 2025. This activity will commence in an area of cutting to the north of the Shannon Park Roundabout. Blasting activities will occur at specific notified times and in a regular pattern between Monday and Friday during daylight hours until February 2026. Blasting shall be conducted in accordance with statutory requirements and relevant codes of practice and in such a way so as to prevent adverse impacts to the public, property, and environment. BAM will notify all relevant parties in advance of any blasting activity.

If there are any queries regarding construction works, you can contact Des Gilsenan, Public Relations Officer for BAM.

Ringaskiddy Urban Realm

Night works will continue throughout next week to facilitate road resurfacing works which will be followed by road markings. The Contractor will continue with finishing works, such as landscaping and installing signage, during the day shift. Daytime traffic management is expected to be kept to a minimum, but Cork County Council will continue to coordinate all traffic management measures with Coffey Construction.
The official opening of the Ringaskiddy Urban Realm and Active Travel Scheme is scheduled for early September 2025 with further updates closer to the date.

Ringaskiddy Relief Road

Steady progress continues on the Ringaskiddy Relief Road.
At Barnahely Roundabout, offline works are continuing. Over the past few weeks, the majority of the works have been on the western side of the roundabout, with a focus on drainage and diversions of both the gas and water mains. Earthworks continue to be carried out for construction of the L6474 West Link Road.
The new underpass at Old Post Office Road was installed between Wednesday 30th July and Friday 1st August.
To finalise the excavation works on Loughbeg Road, traffic will be reduced to one lane for a period of 10 weeks, with traffic management in operation for the duration of these works.
All services and drainage have been laid through the main cut at Loughbeg, and the surface water drainage channel has been installed. This area will be prepared for surfacing over the coming weeks. The brick paving at Ringaskiddy Roundabout is complete. Installation of signage, fencing and the final surface course is planned over the coming weeks in this area.
